Reina Sofía Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto de Tenerife Sur Reina Sofía, IATA code: TFS, ICAO code: GCTS) – this international airport is strategically located in the South of Tenerife, approximately 71 km from the island's other airport, Aeropuerto de Tenerife Norte Los Rodeos. TFS stands as the busier of the two, handling a greater volume of passengers and cargo compared to its northern counterpart. In 2006 alone, Aeropuerto de Tenerife Sur served an impressive 8.8 million passengers.
The airport was officially inaugurated by Spanish Queen Sofía on November 8, 1978. The very first aircraft to grace its runway was an Iberia McDonnell Douglas DC-9, flight IB187, arriving at 10:17 AM from the island of Lanzarote.
